Background of the Study
Triage systems are essential in accident and emergency (A&E) departments, where prioritizing patient care based on urgency is critical to saving lives. In Kaduna State, A&E departments face significant challenges due to high patient volumes, limited resources, and varying levels of staff expertise. An effective triage system ensures that critically ill or injured patients receive timely care, thereby improving overall patient outcomes.
Triage systems, such as the Manchester Triage System (MTS) and the South African Triage Scale (SATS), are designed to streamline patient flow and optimize resource utilization. However, the effectiveness of these systems in Kaduna State is influenced by factors such as staff training, adherence to protocols, and infrastructural support. Evaluating the effectiveness of triage systems is essential for identifying gaps and implementing improvements.
Statement of the Problem
Accident and emergency departments in Kaduna State often experience overcrowding, leading to delays in patient care and increased mortality rates. While triage systems are intended to address these issues, their effectiveness is hindered by factors such as inadequate staff training, poor adherence to protocols, and resource constraints.
There is limited research on the effectiveness of triage systems in A&E departments in Kaduna State. Understanding these challenges is crucial for improving the efficiency of emergency care services and ensuring better patient outcomes.
